Sustainable Community

As concerns over urban air pollution, water scarcity and global warming have grown, sustainability has gained resonance with the public sector and the general public. In the City of Los Angeles, government policy is emerging in support of energy efficiency, renewable energy and other green building strategies. Las Lomas is designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable communities, a place that offers pedestrian-centered living and an enhanced quality of life.

Las Lomas will function as a live-work community and will feature pedestrian-centered, connected clusters of mixed housing, office, recreational and retail spaces. Residents will enjoy the benefits of compact, walkable communities, generous open space and convenient, reliable connections to local and mass transit.

With innovative strategies for reliable, independent energy and integral water management, Las Lomas will promote sustainable development patterns that protect precious resources for future generations.

Las Lomas’ sustainability guidelines incorporate innovations that address environmental protection, social responsibility and economic viability in an integrated and comprehensive manner. Specifically, Las Lomas will:

  • Adhere to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for development.
  • Utilize the latest in recycled and low-VOC green building materials and renewable energy sources like solar arrays and wind turbines.
  • Provide an ample supply of tertiary level storm water and waste water treatment, as well as water reuse for non-potable uses throughout the community.
  • Set limits on the amount of non-permeable surfaces to reduce storm water runoff and promote on-site storm water retention.
  • Use of numerous transportation options to reduce vehicle miles traveled.
  • Plant native and drought-tolerant vegetation throughout the community.
  • Commit to almost no net import and export of soil for grading, since the soil for grading will be balanced on site.
  •
